I have used this book with teens for tutoring purposes. Dr Alfred Russel Wallace and his mother (from Miss Houghton's collection) m. Elsie Smucker had taken care of her parents and her brothers. A must read for any child and lovely reminder for adults. I found Bystander to be an insightful read. Well written engaging and practical. It is 1946, and seventeen-year-old Laura Telling is stagnating in her dilapidated Sussex family home, while her eccentric parents slip further into isolation. If they don't know about you they can't come to hear God's Word and be heart-changed by Jesus. I wasn't a fan of how much backstory was inserted or of the love triangle angle it felt a little too much like a teenage boy's fantasy, but it didn't detract from the story that much. Wohl grew up in Ohio, subscribing to a common perception of the American West as an unchanged frontier. Even beginners should buy this book. This book as been compared to Robinson Crusoe, King Solomon's Mines, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and The Odyssey. They trace the concentric circles of responsibility in building community, the guarded welcome of society’s outcasts within community, and the establishment of a brit between a community and its professional leadership.
